The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico hit the region's economy hard. Animal rescue groups and shelters throughout the Gulf Coast saw an enormous increase in calls for help as well as drop in donations this summer. Shelters are running out of room and out of funds to care for the pets at a time when their communities need them the most.
Shelters and other rescue groups from outside the region are stepping forward and offering to help take additional animals, similar to the rescue efforts made during Hurricane Katrina. But these groups also need assistance to transport and care for the pets they take in.
